The Service Public de Wallonie Mobilité et Infrastructures (SPWMI) has partnered with IMDC in order to develop a Digital Twin and a Real-Time Decision Support System that aim at centralizing and optimizing the management of all infrastructure along the navigable waterways in the Wallon Region, Belgium. This network extends over 450 km of navigable canals and rivers and includes numerous structures, including 82 locks, boat lifts, an inclined plane, large storage dams and numerous pumping and turbine installations

The project consists on the development of a detailed hydraulic model and a highly-performant conceptual model coupled with optimisation algorithms. These algorithms aim at finding the near-optimal set of operational rules for the network’s assets, considering the various uses and constraints of the system (multi-objective optimisation); to name a few: navigability, water resources management, and energy costs. These models and optimisation routines constitute the basis of the Real-Time Decision Support System that has been made available to SPWMI experts and operators to support their daily activities, but also as a long-term planning tool for an efficient and harmonious development of the network.
