CFD modelling of wave forces on vertical piles

In marine engineering, understanding the dynamic interaction between structures and environmental forces is paramount. Simulating wave forces is crucial for ensuring the structural integrity and stability of marine infrastructure. Accurate numerical simulations enable us to design resilient structures capable of withstanding harsh marine conditions. This study aims to invest in an accurate numerical model setup to ensure the reliability and precision of wave simulations.

IMDC has set up OpenFOAM (using the olaFlow solver) to simulate wave propagation around marine infrastructures. The model was applied to study the interaction of a regular wave with a vertical pile. The results show that the model accurately predicted wave behavior. Evaluated results include the temporal evolution of inline wave forces, horizontal velocity at different elevations, and changes in the water surface around the pile.

Time history of the total force acting on the pile.

Time histories of horizontal velocity at different elevations.

Time histories of free-surface displacements at various locations.
