Junior Coastal Engineer (ref. 116)

IMDC is an international consultancy providing advice upon the development and management of water related projects in the offshore, marine, coastal and river environment. IMDC provides services to the renewable (offshore wind, wave and tidal energy), power generation, transmission infrastructure, navigation, integrated water risk management, ports & harbours, environmental and public sector markets (flood risks, coastal protection).

Job Description

IMDC is looking for a junior coastal engineer with an interest in a wide range of coastal engineering and management studies. You will be engaged in project related to coastal modelling (waves, currents, sediment transport, erosion, flooding …), design (beach nourishments, coastal structures, erosion protection, …) and management of coastal and estuarine systems. In multidisciplinary teams you will assess and deal with natural hazards such as coastal erosion and coastal and riverine flooding for present and future conditions, anticipating the effects of climate change. You will be able to discover different technical domains and will be involved in projects both in national and international context. You will be able to apply your relevant technical knowledge in a team of professionals. By linking your technical understanding of a problem to practical knowledge, you provide our clients with the best technical and economical solutions.

Your profile

  • You are a master in coastal engineering, hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, or equivalent. A first work experience in the field of coastal engineering, or a thesis in a related field, is an advantage.
  • You show flexibility, willingness to learn and broaden your knowledge in a variety of technical fields. 
  • You are highly interested in the design of coastal and offshore structures and/or in modelling coastal and estuarine systems (waves, current, sediment transport and morphology).
  • You have an analytical mindset and good programming skills (Python, Matlab, R…), experience with coastal modelling tools (waves, currents, sediment transport, erosion, flooding …) and QGIS/GIS is an advantage. You are pro-active and not afraid to take initiative to report and ask for feedback. You are a real problem solver, and always looking for ways to improve models and our way of working. 
  • You have excellent communication and reporting skills in English (both in writing and verbally). Fluency in Dutch and or French is an asset. 
  • You show responsibility to meet planning, budget and technical requirements. 
  • And last but not least: you want to use your skills to contribute to shaping our engineering designs in balance with nature.
