Job description

IMDC is looking for a biologist, biochemist, bio-engineer or physicist with a specialisation in ecosystem functioning, energy flow and biomass processes. You will be engaged in studies and projects related to water quality and ecosystem modelling and management of natural river, estuarine and marine systems both in a national and international context. You will be able to apply your relevant technical knowledge in a team of professionals. By linking your technical understanding of a problem to practical knowledge, you provide our clients with the best technical and economical solutions.

Your profile

  • You are a master in biology, biochemistry, bio-engineering, or physics with a specialisation or interest in ecosystem management, and you hold a PhD, or have substantial job experience. You have a proven scientific record in related subjects or an equivalent level by experience.
  • You have knowledge of habitat evolution, the influence of water quality, chemical reactions, and hydrodynamic boundary conditions, sediment movement, energy flow and biomass processes, the food web, and the development of trophic levels.
  • You have experience with developing and using water quality and ecosystem models. You are interested in and flexible enough to also take up modelling of hydrodynamics and sediment movement of natural water systems with rainfall run-off and open channel flow models.
  • You look forward to continue to deploy and develop your expertise in the analysis of ecosystems for preservation and management purposes.
  • You have an analytical mindset, are keen on analysing data, using your programming skills (Python, Matlab, R…) and using modelling tools.
  • You are pro-active and not afraid to take initiative to report and ask for feedback. You are a real problem solver, and always looking for ways to improve models and our way of working.
  • You have excellent communication and reporting skills in English (both in writing and verbally). Fluency in French and or Dutch is an asset.
  • You show responsibility to meet planning, budget and technical requirements.
  • And last but not least: you want to use your skills to contribute to shaping our engineering designs in balance with nature.

Our offer

  • A young and dynamic work environment that values professional development and initiative where you are supported daily by colleagues from all over the world.
  • A range of interesting, challenging and significant (inter)national projects (with occasional brief assignments abroad) in a company that has innovation and sustainability as its core values.
  • An attractive salary package (including insurance and bonus plan).
  • A flexible work schedule and good work-life balance, plus an office next to the Antwerp and Ghent train station.
