Design of controlled inundation plains along the river Scheldt
As part of the Sigmaplan, controlled inundation plains and reduced tidal plains will be realised along the river Scheldt to minimise risk of flooding. Amongst other locations, these plains are built at Wichelen and Berlare, where three areas are prepared to store 4.3, 1.4 and 3.0 million cubic metres of water. IMDC is responsible for the hydraulic design to make this areas operational.
The following infrastructure is being designed:
Inflow and outflow structures, sluices, gates and valves;
8 km of overflow dams and 7 km of encircling dikes;
