IMDC is an international consultancy providing advice upon the development and management of water related projects in the offshore, marine, coastal and river environment. IMDC provides services to the renewable (offshore wind, wave and tidal energy), power generation (nuclear, gas), transmission infrastructure, navigation, integrated water risk management, ports & harbours, environmental and public sector markets (flood risks, coastal protection).
At this moment we work with 80 highly qualified employees on projects integrating scientific research with hydraulic engineering. IMDC has a strong reputation for the provision of high quality expert advice and innovative solutions to its clients (e.g. tailor-made measurements and forecasting systems). IMDC is part of the Tractebel Engineering Group and we closely work together to provide engineering solutions for a sustainable future.

This position is open in view of the creation of one integrated team and one management team for both IMDC and Tractebel’s division Ports and Waterways.

Your role

The Commercial Director is a senior management position with responsibility over the Business Development and Sales team. You will work as a team player in close collaboration with the CEO and the Operational Directors of the two divisions “Consultancy” (former IMDC) and “Engineering” (former Ports and Waterways). Within the Management Team, you will be responsible for achieving specific targets described in commercial KPI’s. 

Your main responsibility is to envision and implement commercial & business strategies in line with the company’s vision, to increase the export of our expertise in water related consultancy and engineering on a global scale. 

On a daily basis, you will provide direction and support to the commercial managers overseeing our target markets and business developers and translate the commercial strategy into appropriate activities for the different markets. 

You will have strong impact on the work we do by having decision power over Go – No-Go decisions, strategic choices, and commercial priorities.  

Job description

  • Lead by example as a member of the management team (MT)
  • Bear responsibility over commercial strategy, price strategy and targets
  • Develop and review of commercial plans, focus and targets
  • Perform market reviews and translate insights to strategy updates
  • Manage and coach the team of commercial managers (5 people) and the commercial support team (secretary)
  • Evaluate risks during the tendering processes
  • Develop and maintain a global network of potential clients
  • Keep close contact with selected Key Accounts
  • Follow up on client satisfaction and propose improvements  

Your profile

  • You have a Master’s degree in Engineering, Business Engineering or Business Administration
  • You have at least 10 years of experience in commercial activities in a leading role, preferably in the engineering (consultancy) sector 
  • You have experience in one of the following areas: offshore energy, coastal management, port infrastructure and inland water management or any related area 
  • You have a deep understanding of the commercial strategies, pricing strategies, risk assessments, contractual implicates and strong negotiation and networking skills
  • You have successfully developed a network in the governmental and/or engineering and/or contractor world, preferably related to engineering
  • Experience with or networks into international finance institutes are considered an asset
  • Having technical knowledge of water related projects (both engineering and consultancy) are considered an asset but not a must
  • You are a leader rather than a manager and prefer to work in a team environment
  • You comfortably work in cross-cultural environment and international organizations
  • You can work under pressure
  • You have strong communications skills
  • Frequent travelling is considered as part of your job
  • You are fluent in English and have an excellent working knowledge of French, Dutch, Spanish or other languages
